Your Workspace
Another great article from Steve Pavlina, about Relaxifying Your Workspace. I don't have any plants in my office but I think they would be nice. I just have a habit of killing houseplants somehow. I can do great in the garden, but houseplants and I don't get along somehow.
I desperately need to pay attention to my office. I'm in a spare bedroom, which is normally just fine but in the summer gets a wee bit hot, being on the second story of the house with at least 2 computers running all day. The ceiling fan helps somewhat but since I resist running the air conditioning (partially for fear of freezing out the downstairs) it does get uncomfortable.
I still have a mishmash of furniture, although I've been self employed full time for almost 9 years at this point. Most of my work is done on a huge folding table. My two computers sit happily underneath it and two keyboards, two mice, etc. fit on top with plenty of room for spreading out all the papers I invariably need. I do have a small stereo in there but rarely use it. I rarely play music when working. When I'm writing, I can't listen to anything with vocals. When I'm coding/designing, I can play music but frequently just forget to. Plus I sometimes jump back and forth during the day as I like to shift gears.
Next to my table is an old two-drawer filing cabinet, one drawer for household stuff, one for work. On top of that is my laser printer. To the right is an old sofa table, the kind that is a bit high and usually sits behind a couch. It's perfect for the fax machine and a bit of other extra equipment, with the paper shredder squeezed underneath. A couple of small bookshelves line other walls, plus the dog bed of course--where my mostly Queensland Heeler Molly spends most of the day with me!
But I need to organize a bit more. I have a handful of active projects right now and it gets a bit overwhelming switching gears at a moment's notice. But I like the variety. I have settled on keeping a stack of spiral bound notebooks, like my kids use in school, next to me. One per large client or project and one just for me to note down stuff to do as I think of it. Sort of a running to-do list.
